Cherry blossom, wild violet, snappy cranberry, and a whisper of hibiscus tea - it's floral and bright with a silky, weightless finish. Hailing from two estate vineyards deep in the Russian River Valley, one of the best pinot addresses in California, this organically farmed Pinot is grown by a winemaker who's more obsessive about soil than most people are about their kids. Pairs beautifully with duck, melted brie and cranberries, mushroom risotto, or a very good burger.

Meet the wine
Russian River Valley is pinot's happy place, and the reason is fog. It rolls in off the Pacific overnight and hangs around well into the morning, which keeps things cool and slow enough that the grapes hold their acidity while the flavors keep building. That's where this one gets its brightness, and it's why it stays light on its feet without giving up any depth. Give it twenty minutes in the fridge and it gets even prettier.
Martin pulled the fruit from two sustainably farmed estate vineyards, destemmed everything, and let native yeasts do the fermenting on their own schedule. It aged nine months in a mix of barrel and stainless steel and went into the can unfined, which is a long way of saying nobody stripped anything out on the way to you. Pinot's nickname in the wine world is "the heartbreak grape," because it's thin-skinned, fussy about climate, and rots if you look at it sideways, so a pinot this good is a small miracle every vintage.

Meet the maker
Martin Bernal-Hafner did not start out in wine. He grew up in Colombia and went into finance, until his wife's family roots in the industry got the better of them both and they moved in with a winemaker in the Rhône to learn how it's actually done. Mendoza came next, where Martin studied under Paul Hobbs, and he eventually followed Hobbs back to Sebastopol and stayed.
Alta Orsa roughly translates to "deep-rooted beginning," which fits a guy who farms with compost, cover crops, and a flock of 600 sheep, and who will happily talk your ear off about soil microbes. He is rigorous about the science and completely unembarrassed about the parts he can't measure. As he puts it: "Pinot Noir, more than any other grape, is an honest mirror. It reflects terroir, appellation, and the people who farm it. This one does exactly that."
